Mobile and Manufactured Home Living News (MHLivingNews) Readers’ Choice Spring 2024 Top 30 – See What Attracts and Interests Others Looking Into Manufactured Housing!

“You cook, clean, eat, live, and love  much the same in a manufactured home as you would living in one of millions of similar-sized site built houses in the U.S.A.” ©  MHLivingNews has used variations on that phrasing for years, adding the raft that according to U.S. Census Bureau data, at this time a new HUD Code manufactured home is about half the cost to build as a new conventionally constructed site built house. Those two statements are demonstrably true. In fact, one of the top articles for the Spring 2024 Top 30 on MHLivingNews is a collection of research reports produced by various third parties that routinely demonstrated those statements.

Those facts combined with others found on our site might make some wonder. Then why are manufactured homes underperforming during an affordable housing crisis? That a fair question, as even manufactured home professional Terry Decio said in a video recorded interview that he is tired of being the best kept secret and that he is ready to help house America.

Terry Decio’s father, Arthur “Art” Decio was the founder and chairman of Skyline Homes and was featured on the cover of Time Magazine, as the collage above reflects. Per Time: “Arthur Julius Decio, 35, of Elkhart, Ind., is a millionaire because he early recognized and exploited the billion-dollar-a-year market for low-cost mobile homes…”  See the video with Terry and a related discussion at this link here
A look back at Art Decio on MHProNews is found at this link here:

That Decio quote: “I’m tired of [manufactured housing] being the best kept secret. I’m ready to help house America” ought to be paired with this photo below.

Left to right. At the time this photo was taken Joe Stegmayer was the chairman of Cavco Industries and had also served as the Chairman of the Manufactured Housing Institute. Then there is Joe Adams. Next to Adams is Charlie Lott of Fleetwood Homes, once one of the two biggest producers of manufactured homes, but at the time of that photo and on this date Fleetwood is owned by Cavco. Next to Lott is Kevin Clayton, President and CEO of Clayton Homes, which was once an independent and publicly traded company, but at the time of that photo and on the date this is article is being posted, Clayton Homes is owned by Berkshire Hathaway (BRK). Then there is Terry Decio of what was then still independent Skyline Homes but today is part of Skyline Champion (SKY). See a snapshot of the history of the top 25 manufactured home builders in the past and what happened to them 25 years later.

Four of those men have played a significant role with a major brand in the manufactured home production business. That photo was taken during a break at a Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) meeting.  Stegmayer was a prior MHI chairman. Clayton served for years on the MHI “executive committee,” the top people on their board of directors.

There is no one pithy sentence that can properly explain to a curious mind why manufactured housing is so misunderstood and why it faces so many barriers. This collection of articles that follows represents (after one omission for proprietary reasons) the top 30 articles in the Spring of 2024 on MHLivingNews. This is like a reader’s choice award list because it is readers like you that made the decision on ranking.

How quickly they grow! Our son is about the same height as dad now. On that occasion recalled by this photo, all on Capitol Hill were welcoming and interested in the discussion of manufactured housing-related issues in our 12.3.2019 meetings. But Texas Congressman Al Green’s office was tremendous in their hospitality. Our son’s hand is on a package that included a copy of the Constitution of the United States and other goodies.
